"The Power of Words"
Words are
containers of power. They carry either positive
power, faith, or they carry negative power,
fear
and unbelief. Some might say, "I just don't
think that our words are that important!" Well,
as always, we need to look at what the Bible has
to say about it.
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue:
and they that love it shall eat the fruit
thereof." (Proverbs 18:21)
"For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and
by thy words thou shalt be condemned." (Matthew
12:37)
"Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause
me to understand wherein I have erred. How
forcible are right words! But what doth your
arguing reprove?" (Job 6:24, 25)
"And the tongue is a fire...and setteth on fire
the course of nature..." (James 3:6) |
This is just a short list of scriptures on the
subject. Notice the last one we quoted, James 3:6, it says that the
tongue sets into motion the course of natural events, at least, that
is what the Greek rendering of this verse is. How important are your
words? They determine your circumstances and the events of your
natural life. This goes back to the fact that death and life are in
the power of your words. That is why it is all important that we
choose what we speak, and speak only life-giving words, words filled
with faith and the Life of God!
Like Job did, we need to hold our tongues and allow God to teach us
where we have erred in our speaking. However, the Bible tells us
that we can not tame our tongues with our own natural ability like
we would tame an animal. (James 3:7, 8) How can we tame our tongues
then? Well, Jesus said that out of the abundance of what is in our
heart or spirit, our mouth will speak. (Matthew 12:34) Instead of
bearing down on the words coming out of your mouth, we need to look
to what we are putting in our spirit in abundance. That's why Jesus
said, "Take heed what you hear...' (Mark 4:24) What comes out of our
mouth depends entirely on what we put in our spirits. You can't hear
people tell you that the Word of God doesn't work, and that you have
to fail...day after day; without it affecting you. Take heed what
you hear! You can't avoid all doubt, fear and unbelief; but you can
choose what you hear in abundance. The entrance to the human spirit
is the hearing. "Faith cometh by hearing..." (Romans 10:17) But so
does fear...doubt...unbelief. Guard your spirit, keep it. protect
it. (Proverbs 4:23, 24)
